Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee, an Indian-American economist, was born on February 21, 1961, in Mumbai, India. He is currently the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Banerjee completed his schooling at South Point School and later pursued his bachelor's degree in economics from Presidency College in Kolkata. He went on to earn his master's degree from the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi and then obtained his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1988.

His research work primarily focuses on development economics, and he has made significant contributions to the field. Banerjee has co-founded the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) along with Esther Duflo and Sendhil Mullainathan. J-PAL is a research center that works on reducing poverty by ensuring that policy is based on scientific evidence.

In 2019, Banerjee was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences along with Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty. He became the sixth Indian-born person to win a Nobel Prize.

Throughout his career, Banerjee has received several honors and awards for his outstanding contributions to economics. He has also been a part of various prestigious organizations and advisory boards related to economics and development.

Aside from his academic work, Banerjee is known for his down-to-earth nature and his passion for making a positive impact on society. He is actively involved in various initiatives that aim to improve the lives of the underprivileged and marginalized communities.

He is married to fellow economist Esther Duflo, with whom he often collaborates on research projects. The couple has two children and resides in the United States.

Despite his international recognition and success, Banerjee remains humble and continues to dedicate his work to finding innovative solutions to combat poverty and inequality around the world.
